About us
Our first Shire mare was Trelow Princess Claire, born in 1988, the daughter of the Super Premium stallion Hillmoore Prince Charles, who was Champion at the National Shire Horse Show in Peterborough 1987 and has sired many other champions. In 1996 she gave birth to our first foal, Far Forest Duke of Devon. Princess, her daughter Far Forest Donna Luna and their offspring have brought us many show successes including National Champion titles and Reserve National Champions.
In our breeding programme we place particular emphasis on footing and limbs, because healthy and powerful legs equate to a long horse life. Moreover, we prefer compact horses with a good depth of body. The old English breeder’s phrase "You want to breed an 18 hands horse on 16 hands horses legs" is along the same lines.
An important moment for our breeding programme was the purchase of our Shire stallion Moorfield Huw. He came to us as a three year old licensed stallion in the spring of 2002. He is a compact horse with strong, healthy and defined limbs, a high neck with good topline and a well-balanced nature.
In 2005 we expanded our breeding programme through the purchase of two fillies, Cumeragh House Lady Louise from Lew Harrison in Blackpool in England and Dothan Dwynwen, from the Roberts’ family on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales. Louise is the daughter of the Super Premium stallion Trem-Y-Wyddfa Mascot (National Champion 2005) and the successful mare Acle Mystery.
We have been interested in Clydesdales for a long time, but we only made the decision to include them in our breeding programme in 2009. Inspired by pictures of American Clydesdales in John Zawadzki’s magazine "Clydesdale International" and knowing that the Scottish gene pool is growing even narrower and that in the past few decades American breeders have bought some of the best stallions from Scotland, it seemed to make sense to go to North America in the search for Clydesdales.
In December 2009 it was definite: Cedarlande Thunder from Gerald Wismer’s stud farm in Ontario (Canada) would be our future Clydesdale stallion. He is the son of the most important stallion in North America, SHB Phoenix and he himself is the most successful colt in the overall standings of all US American shows in 2009 (All American). We found our first Clydesdale mare from Pat McMahen from 2S Clydesdales in Texas (USA). Pat is one of the most successful breeders of recent years - several National Champions and All American winners have come from her farm. From 13 foals available that year, we decided on Belle and Impression, two tall and friendly fillies, whose pedigrees are peppered with National Champions and All Americans.
As well as breeding Shires and Clydesdales individually, in the future we would also like to combine the best qualities of both breeds through targeted cross-breeding and contribute to the upgrading possibilities in both stud books for the refinement of the breeds.
